A solid gold toilet worth over £600,000 was stolen from Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England, in September 2019. The toilet, made of 18-carat gold, was part of an art exhibition titled “America” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. It was fully functional and weighed around 98 kilograms.According to prosecutors, the theft was carried out by a group of thieves who broke into the palace and removed the toilet in just five minutes. The toilet was insured for £4.8 million, but its actual value was estimated to be much higher.
The thieves allegedly sold the gold to a jeweler, who melted it down and sold it on.The trial of three men accused of involvement in the theft is currently underway at Oxford Crown Court. The men, Michael Jones, Fred Drou, and Borja Gokcek, deny any involvement in the theft. A fourth man, James Shene, has already pleaded guilty to his role in the theft.
