India has overtaken Japan to become the third most powerful nation in the world, following the United States and China, according to the 2024 Asia Power Index by the Lowy Institute. The index evaluates 27 countries across the Asia-Pacific region based on factors like economic capability, military strength, diplomatic influence, and future resources.
India’s rise is driven by robust economic growth, strong GDP performance, and its ranking as the world’s third-largest economy in purchasing power parity terms. It has also secured third place in future resources, highlighting its potential for continued growth and global influence.
However, the report notes that India’s influence remains below the level promised by its resources, particularly in projecting power east of the Malacca Strait. Japan’s decline, on the other hand, is attributed to slower population growth, limited military expansion, and stagnant economic performance. This milestone underscores India’s growing geopolitical stature and its potential to play a more dominant role in regional and global affairs.
