The conflict in G@za has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with the death toll reaching approximately 64,260, according to a study published in The Lancet. This figure is significantly higher than the 37,877 deaths reported by the P@lestinian Ministry of Health in G@za as of June 30, 2024, indicating an underreporting of about 41%.
The study, conducted by researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Yale University, and other institutions, utilized various data sources, including hospital records, online surveys, and social media obituaries, to estimate the death toll. The analysis suggests that around 3% of G@za’s population has died due to violence, with 59% of the victims being women, children, and the elderly.
The discrepancy between the reported and actual death toll is attributed to the destruction of G@za’s healthcare infrastructure, which has hindered accurate record-keeping. Additionally, many deaths may not have been documented due to bodies remaining under rubble or being buried without proper records.
The humanitarian situation in G@za remains dire, with widespread displacement, infrastructure damage, and shortages of essential resources. The international community continues to call for increased humanitarian assistance and efforts to safeguard civilians in the region.
