Apple Sued Over Toxic Chemicals in Watch Bands.

Apple is currently facing a class-action lawsuit alleging that certain Apple Watch bands contain high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.” The lawsuit specifically targets the “Sport Band,” “Nike Sport Band,” and “Ocean Band,” claiming that these products expose users to toxic substances linked to serious health issues, including various cancers and fertility problems.

The legal action follows a study conducted by the University of Notre Dame, which tested 22 smartwatch bands from various manufacturers. The research revealed that 15 of these bands contained significant levels of PFAS, particularly those made from fluoroelastomer—a material known for its durability and resistance to sweat and oil. The study raised concerns about the potential for these chemicals to be absorbed through the skin, especially during physical activities that induce sweating.

In response to the allegations, Apple has asserted that its Watch bands are crafted from fluoroelastomer, a synthetic rubber containing fluorine but not harmful PFAS chemicals. The company maintains that these materials are safe and have undergone rigorous testing to meet health standards. The lawsuit accuses Apple of false advertising, alleging that the company markets these Watch bands as health-promoting and environmentally sustainable while concealing the presence of harmful chemicals.

The plaintiffs argue that consumers were misled into believing the products were safe for everyday use. This legal challenge highlights the broader issue of PFAS in consumer products. Known for their persistence in the environment and human body, PFAS have been associated with health problems such as birth defects, various cancers, and fertility issues. The case against Apple underscores the need for greater transparency and regulation concerning the use of these substances in everyday items.
