124 Journalists Killed in 2024—Most by Israel

In 2024, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recorded 124 journalist deaths across 18 countries, making it the deadliest year for reporters since the organization began tracking fatalities. The majority of these deaths, nearly 70%,were linked to Isr*eli military actions, particularly in the Isr*el-G@za war, where 85 journalists lost their lives. Most of the journalists killed in G@za were P@lestinian, highlighting the extreme dangers faced by local reporters covering the conflict.

Beyond the war in G@za, at least 24 journalists were deliberately targeted and killed in countries like Haiti, Mexico, Myanmar, and Sudan. These targeted attacks reflect a growing global threat to press freedom, as journalists continue to be silenced for their reporting. The sharp rise in journalist killings in 2024 underscores a broader decline in protections for media workers, especially in war zones. CPJ has called for greater accountability and stronger international measures to ensure journalists can safely carry out their work without fear of violence or retaliation.
